Dealers offer convenience. Private sale offers more money. The gap between the two is typically 10–20% of the car's retail value — which on a £10,000 car is £1,000 to £2,000. Whether that difference is worth the effort depends on the car, the market, and how much time you have.

01.What private sale actually gets you

On most cars, a well-presented private listing with good photos and an accurate description will achieve closer to the retail price than any part exchange offer. Buyers pay retail price because they trust they are getting a good deal versus a dealer forecourt. You benefit from that perception.

02.The real cost of selling privately

It takes time — typically two to eight weeks for a standard car. You will need to handle enquiries, deal with time-wasters, arrange viewings, and negotiate. You also bear the responsibility of accurate description; unlike a dealer, you cannot fall back on implied fitness for purpose for a clearly private sale.

03.When part exchange makes sense

If the car has faults that are costly to fix, or if you are buying a car simultaneously and need a smooth transaction, part exchange removes complexity. Dealers also take cars that are difficult to sell privately — high mileage, unusual specifications, or cars with minor outstanding finance.

04.A middle option

Some online car buying services offer guaranteed offers that sit between part exchange and private sale value. They are worth checking if your car is a mainstream model in reasonable condition and you want the money quickly without the work of private sale.
